Standard for Inspection and Scrap Cases of Wire Rope

Wire rope is one of the indispensable parts of the crane. Due to long-term use, it needs to be regularly inspected and maintained. This wire rope standard is used for electric hoist, gantry crane, overhead crane and jib crane.

  •  Daily inspection (visual):

1. At least the expected working portion of the rope on that particular date shall be observed to detect any general or mechanical damage. This should include the connection point of the rope to the crane.

2. The rope should also be checked to ensure that it is properly secured to the drum and above the pulley and does not deviate from the normal operating position.

3. Any apparent change in condition shall be reported and the ropes shall be inspected by qualified personnel according to regular inspections.

4. If the rigging arrangement is modified at any time, for example when the crane is moved to a new location and rerigged, the rope shall be visually inspected as described in this article.

5. The driver/operator of the crane may be designated for routine inspection, provided that the driver/operator is adequately trained and deemed capable of performing this operation.

  • Periodic inspection:

1. Regular inspection shall be carried out by qualified personnel.

2.The information obtained from the periodic inspections will be used to help determine whether the crane ropes are safe to continue and should be subject to the next periodic inspection at the latest, or need to be withdrawn immediately or within a specified time.

3. By appropriate assessment methods, i.e. by visual means and/or measurement, or using MRT, The severity of the deterioration should be assessed and expressed as a percentage (e.g. 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100%) of the specific individual discarding criteria or words (e.g., "slight," "medium," "high," "very high," or "discarded").

4. Any damage that may occur to the rope before it is in operation and put into service shall be assessed by qualified personnel and the observations recorded.

5. The scope includes: drum anchoring, any part at and near the end of the rope, any part passing through one or more pulleys, any part passing through a safety load indicator containing the pulley, any part passing through the hook group, and, if the crane performs repeated operations, any part of the rope located on the pulley while the crane is under load.

In general, regular inspection of wire ropes is essential to detect potential problems early, ensure personnel safety, prevent equipment failures, and minimize downtime. With proper training, certification and compliance with maintenance practices, industries can maximize the life of cranes, hoists or other lifting equipment and create a safer working environment.
