What is a double girder gantry crane?
A double girder gantry crane is a heavy-duty lifting equipment widely used in heavy industries. Its main girder is composed of two box-shaped or truss beams, supported on the ground rails by legs, resembling a "gate", and is capable of lifting and transporting operations in three-dimensional space above a rectangular site. Components of double girder gantry cranes
A double girder gantry crane is composed of main gantry frame, operating and lifting mechanism, and electrical control system. Each of these three metal mechanism, there are some other components as below.
Main gantry frame
The main gantry frame is the main framework that forms the shape of the gantry crane and bears all the loads.
Main girder: It is the main load-bearing and force-transmitting component of the double girder gantry crane. The double-girder gantry crane has two parallel main beams that directly support the lifting trolley. It has two structural styles - box girder and truss girder. The advantage of box girder is high rigidity, good stability, mature manufacturing process, suitable for various working environments. The advantage of truss girder is light weight and low wind resistance, and is often used in large-span and outdoor environments where strict requirements are imposed on the self-weight.
Outriggers: It supports the main girder of gantry crane and transfer all the loads to the ground rail.
Ground beam: It connects the bottoms of the two outriggers to form a stable frame for the gantry.
End beam: It locates at both ends of the main beam, it is used to securely connect or interlock the main beam with the supporting legs.
Crane cab: It is the working space for the gantry crane operator. It is usually suspended below or on one side of the main beam, and requires good visibility, safety and comfort.
Walkway platform: The passageways and guardrails set along the main beams facilitate the safe passage of maintenance and repair personnel.
Operating and Lifting mechanism
Lifting system: The lifting system realizes the vertical lifting and lowering of heavy objects, which is the most fundamental and crucial mechanism of a double girder gantry crane. The lifting system is equipped with hoist trolley or winch trolley. Either hoist trolley or winch trolley is composed of drive motor, reducer, drum, wire rope, pulley block assembly, hook assembly, and brake.
Trolley travel mechanism: It drives the lifting trolley to move laterally (perpendicular to the direction of the main girder track) along the track of the main girder to adjust the position of the hook in the width direction. It includes trolley frame, wheels, drive motor, reducer, brake, etc.
Crane trolley running mechanism: It drives the entire gantry crane to move longitudinally along the ground rail, covering the entire working area.
Electrical control system
The electrical control system supplies current to the entire double-girder gantry crane, providing power and also responsible for safety protection. It is usually composed of a power introduction device, a control core, and a safety protection system. The power introduction device typically uses sliding wires or cables. Sliding wires are the most commonly used power supply devices on double-girder gantry cranes, and they draw power from the bare copper wires laid along the track using collectors. Cables are usually used in situations with short moving distances or special conditions. The control core is usually operated by the driver's cab or remote controller to control the operation of the gantry crane, using resistance boxes to regulate speed and limit starting current, and using PLCs for logical control, fault diagnosis, and protection. At the same time, a frequency converter is used as a key component to achieve soft start, soft stop, and stepless speed regulation of the motor, making the operation extremely smooth and significantly reducing mechanical shock. The safety protection system usually includes overload limiters, travel limiters, buffers and end stop blocks, wind protection devices, and emergency stop switches, etc to keep safe.
